Majority of us use to wonder why we need a costly fanless box computer in a toll plaza. Well it is costly but cater to the actual requirement with almost no failure of the Computer.
Here are few of the Unique points of Fanless Computer
- No Fan and no mechanical moving parts inside. Once the moving part is stopped the CPU will heat up and will stop working. In fanless system the body itself is an heat sink. All the heat generated in the CPU is dissipated through the thick Aluminum heat sink fins of the body.
- No Hard Disk, uses only Solid State Disk (SSD). This makes it possible to use the Fanless system work into higher temperature of +70C, more shock and vibration capabilities.
- There are no cables inside the fanless box computer. All are connected through the Board periphery.
- Compared to ATX or Mini-ITX based industrial computers, the size of the fanless computer is small.
- IP40 of IP50 rating compared to the IP20 of ATX system make the box computers more immune against the rack mount computer.
- Fanless system uses Single Board Computers. The SBC are more compact compared to the Mother Boards. This saves the metal used for enclosure and transportation charges.
- The ports are on the periphery of the SBC and they are directly connected to the enclosure without cables.
- MTBF of the SBC used inside is more than the Industrial grade Mother boards. So the life of the Fanless Computers are more.
- miniPCIe based expansion slots and Antenna holes for remote wireless connectivity.
The limitation of the Fanless system are into the expansion capabilities. Either there are no PCI slots or only 1 to 4 PCI slots in Fanless Computers.
Where are the ATX based Rack mount Computers have 7 PCI slots and PICMG have upto 14 PCI slots.
If much expansion slots are not required it is better to use Fanless system if the environments are harsh.
