CONNECT PHARMA WEIGHING BALANCES TO TRACEABLE DIGITAL RECORDS
RS-232 / RS-422 / RS-485 to Ethernet Connectivity from SUNDAR TECHNO SOLUTIONS, Bengaluru
A weighing balance shows the weight. A connected weighing system helps your organisation capture, organise, review and retrieve that measurement.
In pharmaceutical manufacturing and laboratories, weighing is part of many critical activities—from raw-material dispensing and sample preparation to formulation and quality control.
When readings are manually copied from a balance into a register or computer, there is an opportunity for typing errors, missed entries and incorrect association with samples or batches.
STS serial-to-Ethernet converters help connect compatible weighing balances to a plant network, enabling suitable software to receive measurements and build useful digital records.
The balance’s built-in display helps the operator see the current weight, check stability and carry out the weighing operation.
However, displaying a measurement and maintaining a traceable electronic record are different functions.
The built-in display alone may not provide centralised access to:
These functions depend on the connected application and the way the complete system is configured.
The local display remains useful at the weighing station, while the computer application can manage the broader workflow.
No. An additional display is useful when operators need to see instructions, select a batch, identify a sample, enter material details or review an accepted measurement.
A workstation or industrial panel PC can provide this interface. A central application can also collect data from several compatible balances.
Whether you need a display at every station, one shared workstation or only a central server depends on your operating procedure and software design.
Many weighing instruments have a serial communication interface such as RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485.
An appropriately selected STS serial device server connects that serial interface to an Ethernet network so compatible software can communicate with the instrument.
Typical data path:
Weighing balance → Serial connection → STS converter → Ethernet network → Computer/server application → Digital records
The converter carries the instrument’s data across the network. The receiving software must understand the balance’s communication format and interpret the measurement correctly.
Depending on the selected model and application, communication may use a network connection directly or supported virtual COM-port software.
An Ethernet connection can operate entirely within your local plant network. Internet access or cloud storage is not inherently required.
Selecting the correct communication method is essential.
A serial device server transports serial data over Ethernet. A Modbus gateway performs supported protocol conversion, such as Modbus RTU to Modbus TCP.
These functions are related, but they are not interchangeable.
An RS-485 port does not automatically mean an instrument uses Modbus. A balance may instead transmit text-based readings or use a manufacturer-specific command format.
For a Modbus-enabled weighing indicator, a compatible Modbus gateway may be appropriate. For other balances, transparent serial communication and a suitable software driver or parser may be needed.
STS can review your instrument details to help identify the appropriate connectivity hardware.
A server-based application can bring measurements from multiple stations into one managed system.
With suitable software and configuration, a weighing record can combine:
• Weight value and unit.
• Balance or instrument ID.
• Date and time.
• Operator identity.
• Material and batch number.
• Sample or work-order reference.
• Stable-weight status, where the instrument provides it.
• Review or approval information.
Some information comes from the balance. Other details come from the software workflow, authorised user entries or integration with another business system.
This can help production, quality control and quality assurance teams retrieve the information they need without searching through separate handwritten records.
For example, a dispensing application could associate an accepted weight with the selected raw material, batch and logged-in operator.
21 CFR Part 11 is the US FDA regulation addressing electronic records and electronic signatures.
It establishes criteria for accepting qualifying electronic records and signatures as trustworthy alternatives to paper records and handwritten signatures.
Its applicability depends on the records involved and how they are used to meet FDA requirements. Connecting a balance to Ethernet does not, by itself, make Part 11 applicable to every measurement.
For relevant pharmaceutical workflows, the complete system should address appropriate access controls, validation, record protection, audit trails and electronic-signature controls where applicable. The scope should reflect the intended use, applicable rules and documented risk assessment.
An STS converter provides connectivity. Compliance depends on the validated end-to-end system, software controls and site procedures. The converter alone does not make a weighing balance or system 21 CFR Part 11 compliant.
A successful installation starts with the actual instrument and workflow.

The integration should also check units, decimal places, stable readings, device identification and behaviour after a communication or power interruption.
Automatic collection can reduce manual transcription, but the system must still identify missing, duplicated or unsuitable readings correctly.

Connections to LIMS, MES, ERP or other applications depend on the receiving software, supported interfaces and project scope.
Suitable connectivity can also benefit food, speciality chemical, cosmetics and industrial testing applications.
A converter adds communication capability; it does not improve the balance’s measurement accuracy or replace calibration.
