WHY SIX NETWORK PORTS?

With suitable software and configuration, separate interfaces can serve your internet connection, office LAN, server network, guest network, CCTV network or a DMZ for public-facing services.

This helps create controlled network zones instead of allowing every connected device unrestricted access to everything else.

WHY IS IT CALLED CYBERSECURITY HARDWARE?

The appliance provides the physical computing platform and network interfaces on which firewall and security software runs.

The hardware processes traffic; the software applies security rules, access controls, logging and supported threat-detection functions. Effective protection depends on both, together with correct installation and ongoing updates.

WHICH SOFTWARE OPTIONS CAN BE CONSIDERED?

• pfSense Community Edition — firewall, routing and VPN deployments.

• OPNsense — firewall and VPN functionality, with supported security extensions.

• IPFire — Linux-based firewall with intrusion-prevention capabilities.

• OpenWrt x86 — configurable routing and firewall applications.

• Ubuntu Server — a custom Linux gateway using nftables or UFW, with additional tools where required.

These are candidate platforms, not a statement that every option has been tested on this unit. Final suitability depends on CPU architecture, memory, storage, Ethernet controllers, drivers and the selected software version. Licences, subscriptions and configuration services may be separate.

WHAT ABOUT UBUNTU?

Ubuntu Server can be considered after checking the exact motherboard, CPU, storage and network-controller support. Installing Ubuntu alone does not create a complete enterprise security solution: firewall rules, routing, updates, monitoring and any IDS/IPS services must also be configured.

Ask STS for validation of the Ubuntu version required for your project.

WHAT THREATS CAN A FIREWALL HELP ADDRESS?

Depending on the installed software and enabled features:

• Unauthorised inbound connections and exposed network services.

• Unwanted communication between office, guest, CCTV and server networks.

• Known malicious destinations through IP, DNS or URL filtering.

• Recognisable network exploits through an intrusion-prevention system.

• Some malware, trojan, spyware and botnet communications.

• Some ransomware-related network activity and lateral movement.

• Certain flooding or connection-abuse attempts within the appliance’s capacity.

A basic firewall does not automatically scan every file or remove malware from an infected computer. Encrypted traffic can limit inspection. Endpoint protection, backups, software updates and user awareness remain essential. Large DDoS attacks may require protection from your ISP or a specialist service.
