Solar farms and plants have many field devices generating useful operating data. The STS Modbus Gateway helps connect compatible RS-485 Modbus equipment to an Ethernet network, so monitoring systems can collect data centrally.

How it can be used in a solar plant

The gateway can connect to Modbus-compatible devices such as:

Solar inverters

Energy meters at inverter, feeder or grid-connection points

Weather stations and irradiance sensors

Combiner-box monitors

Compatible battery storage equipment

It bridges Modbus RTU over RS-485 with Modbus TCP over Ethernet, allowing a SCADA or energy-management system to read the available device data. Depending on the equipment and its Modbus register map, this may include power and energy readings, operating status and alarms.

Why use a Modbus gateway?

A gateway helps bring serial Modbus devices onto an Ethernet-based monitoring network. Multiple compatible RS-485 devices can share a bus, which can simplify data collection across a plant. The 5143D supports up to 32 RS-485 slave devices on its bus; the practical number and polling performance depend on device settings, cable layout and the application.
