**CONSOLIDATE CONTROL: SOFTPLC + HMI + EDGE IoT ON AN INDUSTRIAL PC**
A SoftPLC is software that runs PLC control logic on a computer. It can use familiar IEC 61131-3 programming languages, depending on the selected platform. With compatible remote I/O, sensors and actuators connect to I/O modules, and the SoftPLC exchanges data with them over an industrial network.

**How it can add value**
A conventional PLC remains an excellent choice for many machines. A SoftPLC-based embedded PC can be useful when an application also needs HMI, data logging, database connectivity, OPC UA, MQTT or edge software. Depending on the project, functions that would otherwise need separate computers or gateways may be consolidated on one platform.
With a suitable HMI application on the PC, a separate HMI panel may not be needed. The operator still needs a display and input method, such as a connected monitor or touchscreen.
Remote I/O placed near the machine can shorten some long field cable runs and reduce control-cabinet wiring. It may also reduce interconnections between separate controllers. However, sensors and actuators still need field wiring and distributed I/O adds network cabling. Ferruling, cable trays, cable lengths, cabinet space and installed cost all depend on the actual layout; savings should be measured for each project.
**Typical embedded PC starting point**
A possible starting configuration for a SoftPLC project could include an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, 16–32 GB RAM, an industrial SSD, dual Ethernet ports, USB and any required serial or expansion interfaces. The final specification depends on the PLC runtime, I/O network, HMI, data workload, operating environment and required control cycle. Confirm the runtime’s supported operating system and real-time requirements with its supplier.
