INDUSTRIAL GRADE KVM EXTENDERS USING ETHERNET / OFC

**INDUSTRIAL GRADE KVM EXTENDERS USING ETHERNET / OFC**
What if the computer or server needs to remain in a control room, rack or protected area, while the operator needs to work from another location? A KVM extender carries the user’s control and display signals between the computer and a remote console.
**KVM** stands for **Keyboard, Video and Mouse**. A KVM extender normally has a transmitter (**TX**) near the computer and a receiver (**RX**) near the operator’s monitor, keyboard and mouse.
### Why is it also called an HDMI extender?
HDMI carries the video signal from the computer to the display. Many KVM extender systems carry HDMI video together with USB signals for the keyboard and mouse. Depending on the model, the extender may also carry audio, serial signals or other interfaces. That is why products are often described as HDMI extenders with KVM, or HDMI KVM extenders.
### Ethernet/Cat6 or fiber optic cable?
🔹 **Ethernet/Cat6 KVM extenders**
Standard twisted-pair Ethernet cabling has a 100 m channel limit. Certain KVM extender models are designed to operate over longer Cat6 runs, including some rated for 200 m. That extended reach is specific to the model and installation; it is not a general Ethernet distance guarantee. The KVM link may be a dedicated point-to-point connection and may not work through an ordinary network switch unless the manufacturer specifically supports that setup.
🔹 **Fiber optic KVM extenders**
Fiber is used when the required distance is beyond the supported copper run, or when the installation needs the benefits of fiber such as electrical isolation. Depending on the extender, transceiver and fiber, supported links can range from hundreds of metres to many kilometres. Long-distance figures such as 100 km apply only to particular equipment and optics, not to every KVM extender.
### Which SFP and fiber should you choose?
The correct choice depends on the KVM extender’s datasheet. Confirm the supported SFP speed, wavelength, connector, fiber type and maximum optical distance at both TX and RX.
• **Multimode (MM):** Often used for shorter optical links. A common 1G example is 1000BASE‑SX at 850 nm; reach depends on the fiber grade and equipment.
• **Single-mode (SM):** Often used for longer links. A common 1G example is 1000BASE‑LX/LH at 1310 nm, typically rated up to 10 km on compatible single-mode fiber.
• **Longer-reach optics:** 20 km, 40 km, 80 km or 100 km optics exist for specific systems. They must match the extender’s requirements and the fiber route’s optical budget.
• **TX/RX matching:** Use the correct compatible pair. BiDi single-fiber optics require complementary transmit and receive wavelengths. Do not mix modules based on distance alone.
### What happens to USB and audio?
The extender’s USB connection lets the operator use a keyboard and mouse at the remote console. Some models support only USB HID devices; others support more transparent USB 2.0 functions. Audio may be carried alongside video, but formats and direction of audio support vary by product. Check the datasheet for the exact USB device types, audio channels, resolution, refresh rate, cable category, SFP and distance.
### Where are industrial KVM extenders used?
Control rooms • Factory automation • Power and utility installations • Process industries • Transportation and infrastructure • Security and surveillance rooms • Medical and laboratory equipment • Broadcast and AV control • Server rooms and industrial racks
**Why consider an industrial-grade KVM extender?**
Industrial installations may need reliable remote operation, long cable runs and equipment suited to demanding environments. Select the extender based on the actual video resolution, USB devices, audio needs, distance, cable route and operating conditions—not just the connector type.
