INDUSTRIAL PROTOCOL CONVERTERS FOR FACTORY & PROCESS AUTOMATION

🏭 **INDUSTRIAL PROTOCOL CONVERTERS FOR FACTORY & PROCESS AUTOMATION**
Industrial plants often have equipment from different manufacturers, using different communication protocols. A PLC, drive, remote I/O, analyzer, energy meter, building system or legacy machine may not communicate directly with the plant SCADA, DCS, MES or IoT platform.
A protocol converter or gateway helps bridge these systems. It translates or maps data between supported protocols so equipment can exchange information across different parts of an automation network.
## Protocol converters shown in the STS range
**1. STSUST-PX580 — PROFINET to Modbus RTU**
Connects a PROFINET network with Modbus RTU serial devices. Useful when a PROFINET controller needs data from compatible Modbus RTU equipment.
**2. ODOT-PNM02 V2.0 — Modbus RTU/ASCII to PROFINET**
Links Modbus serial devices with a PROFINET system. The serial side communicates with supported Modbus RTU/ASCII equipment; the PROFINET side exchanges mapped data with the automation network.
**3. CANopen Gateway — CANopen to Modbus TCP**
Connects CANopen devices to a Modbus TCP network. It can help bring data from CANopen equipment into a PLC or supervisory system that supports Modbus TCP.
**4. STS Modbus Gateway — Modbus RTU to Modbus TCP**
Connects serial Modbus equipment to an Ethernet-based Modbus TCP network. MQTT/JSON options are available on selected configurations for applications that need data forwarding to software platforms.
**5. 2-Serial Modbus Gateway — Serial Modbus RTU/ASCII to Modbus TCP**
Provides two serial connections for compatible Modbus devices and makes their data available over Ethernet using Modbus TCP.
**6. ZLAN5443A — Modbus TCP to Modbus RTU**
Connects Modbus TCP clients or networks with Modbus RTU serial devices, allowing data exchange between Ethernet and serial Modbus systems.
**7. IEC2022-STS — IEC 60870-5-104 Gateway**
For telecontrol and utility applications using IEC 60870-5-104. The supported protocol pairing and point mapping should be selected to match the devices and control system in the project.
**8. STSSNMP2-680 — Device protocol to SNMP**
Makes supported device information available to SNMP-based network monitoring systems. Useful when industrial or infrastructure equipment needs to be monitored through a network management platform.
**9. OPC UA I/O System — Modbus RTU to OPC UA**
Connects Modbus RTU devices to OPC UA clients and software. This can make field data available to SCADA, MES, industrial software and other OPC UA-compatible systems.
**10. 4-Serial Modbus Gateway — Serial Modbus RTU/ASCII to Modbus TCP**
Connects multiple serial Modbus devices to an Ethernet network. The number of devices and communication settings depend on the selected model and application.
**11. STS EC112 — Serial Modbus to Ethernet Gateway**
Connects serial Modbus equipment to an Ethernet network for monitoring or data exchange with compatible software and automation systems.
**12. STS2407-A9 — Device data to BACnet, Modbus or OPC UA**
Provides protocol options for integrating supported field or building automation data with BACnet, Modbus or OPC UA systems, according to the selected configuration.
**Additional process automation application: ** STS can also supply the **FINT T500**, a HART Master to PROFIBUS PA Slave converter. It is used to connect compatible HART instruments to a PROFIBUS PA system, with the wider network architecture determined by the project design.
## What happens on each side?
On the **device or field side**, a converter communicates using the protocol supported by instruments, meters, drives, PLCs, remote I/O or other equipment.
On the **controller, network or software side**, it presents mapped data using the protocol expected by a PLC, DCS, SCADA, building management system, network management system or industrial software.
Some gateways support communication in both directions. The exact data flow depends on protocol roles, device settings, firmware and system configuration.
## Why protocol converters matter
**Industry 3.0: ** Plants often need to connect established PLCs, drives and machines that use different protocols. A gateway can help integrate compatible equipment into a common control or monitoring system and make upgrades more practical.
**Industry 4.0: ** Data from operational technology (OT) may need to reach SCADA, MES, OPC UA clients, IoT platforms or analytics software. Gateways can provide protocol translation and data access at the network edge. The gateway itself does not automatically provide cloud analytics or AI; those functions come from the connected software and system design.
