3.5″ Industrial SBC Solutions for Medical Equipment OEMs
Behind an ultrasound scanner’s display and control console is an embedded computing platform that helps run the user interface, imaging software, data storage and communication functions.
SUNDAR TECHNO SOLUTIONS supplies industrial embedded computing solutions for equipment builders, including compact 3.5″ Single Board Computers with display interfaces, USB, serial communication, Ethernet, internal pin headers and processor cooling.
SBC stands for Single Board Computer—a compact computer built around a single main circuit board.
A typical 3.5″ industrial SBC measures approximately 146 × 102 mm. “3.5-inch” is the recognised form-factor name; it does not mean that the board measures 3.5 inches on every side.
Depending on the model, it integrates an embedded processor, graphics, memory interfaces, storage connections, networking and peripheral interfaces. RAM and SSD storage may be fitted separately.
This compact layout allows equipment manufacturers to install computing capability inside a machine without accommodating a full-size desktop motherboard.
Depending on the manufacturer’s architecture and software, the SBC can support:
The ultrasound probe connects to dedicated ultrasound acquisition electronics, including transmit/receive circuitry, analogue front ends and beamforming hardware. The SBC works with these subsystems; an ordinary USB, serial or LVDS connector does not directly replace the probe’s acquisition interface.
Equipment manufacturers need more than processor speed. They also need a board that fits the enclosure, provides the required connections and supports a manageable product lifecycle.
Depending on the selected model, industrial SBC advantages include:
• Compact installation inside the scanner chassis.
• Embedded processor options matched to performance and power requirements.
• Internal headers for connecting displays and control assemblies.
• Extended-temperature configurations.
• Watchdog functions for detecting software hangs and supporting recovery.
• Heatsink or heatspreader options for the enclosure’s thermal design.
• Longer product availability options, helping reduce frequent hardware redesigns.
Modern industrial 3.5″ platforms can provide multiple display outputs, LAN, USB, UART and M.2 expansion on one compact board. Features vary by model.
Processor generation and the i3, i5 or i7 label alone do not determine power consumption. The exact CPU model configured power limits, workload, RAM, SSD and connected peripherals all matter.
For common low-power 12th- and 13th-generation U-series configurations:
• Core i3: approximately 20–35 W for an SBC with modest RAM and SSD under moderate load.
• Core i5: approximately 20–40 W under similar conditions.
• Core i7: approximately 20–45 W under similar conditions.
These are preliminary engineering estimates, not measured STS product specifications. Their ranges overlap because many U-series i3, i5 and i7 processors share a 15 W processor base-power rating. CPU base power is only one part of the board’s input power.
Heavy processing and turbo operation can increase consumption substantially. Higher-performance P/PE-series SBCs may also consume considerably more: one published 12th-generation i7 board configuration specifies approximately 69 W typical and 95 W maximum with 64 GB RAM. Therefore, “all 3.5″ SBCs consume only 15 W” would be incorrect.
For 14th-generation Core i3/i5/i7 platforms, confirm the exact board and processor first. For example, the i3-14100T, i5-14500T and i7-14700T are desktop-class processors with 35 W base power and CPU turbo limits of 69 W, 92 W and 106 W respectively. These are processor figures, before other board loads, and should not be treated as low-power U-series SBC equivalents. Also verify the physical form factor rather than assuming every compact 14th-generation board is 3.5″.
The SBC’s power consumption excludes the scanner’s displays, ultrasound acquisition electronics, probe transmit circuitry and other system loads. Final power-supply and cooling selection must use the actual configuration’s measured peak demand.
An ultrasound scanner combines displays, operator controls, storage, acquisition electronics and networking. These subsystems need different electrical interfaces.
Typical connections may include:
Carries display data to a compatible built-in screen. Panel voltage, pinout, resolution and backlight control must match. A panel’s LVDS interface is different from LVDS signalling used by some acquisition electronics.
Provides a digital image output to a compatible display or video interface.
May connect a touchscreen controller, keyboard, trackball, barcode reader, compatible printer, service device or USB storage. A footswitch may also use USB if designed for it.
May communicate with an OEM control board, power-management controller or service interface. TTL UART and RS-232/RS-485 are electrically different and must be matched correctly.
Supports network communication. DICOM image transfer, PACS access and worklist functions require the appropriate application software and network configuration.
Stores the operating system, application, examination data and images according to the OEM’s software design.
Where supported, these can interface with compatible status signals, sensors or control electronics.
May connect a compatible FPGA, acquisition module or accelerator. Required bandwidth, available PCIe lanes and driver support must be verified.
Powers the SBC at its specified input voltage. Power-button, reset, LED and fan headers support chassis integration.
These are illustrative connection examples. The final wiring depends on the scanner architecture, selected SBC and OEM design.
